Don't risk missing your flight! See how to get organised before departure

Planning a flight is about far more than just packing your suitcase and printing your ticket. Above all, it is about organising the entire day of departure properly, from the moment you leave home until you reach the gate at the airport. Every stage of this journey demands attention: you need to think through what time is best to set off, which means of transport will get you to the airport, and how much time to allow for check-in and the security check. A small mistake is all it takes for the whole plan to fall apart, turning a dream holiday or an important business meeting into a stressful start, or even into a missed flight.

Book parking at the airport in advance

Driving to the airport in your own car is a convenient and often the most reliable solution, especially when departure falls early in the morning and public transport is limited. The problem arises, however, when you haven't booked a parking space in advance. Circling around the airport in search of a free spot is the kind of stress you are far better off avoiding. That is why the best solution is to book parking online ahead of time. This way you not only have a guaranteed space, but you also get peace of mind. Our car park near Chopin Airport offers a convenient online booking system and a transfer to the terminal in an air-conditioned shuttle bus, which takes you from the car park to the departures hall in about 10 minutes.

Check your flight details and terminal carefully before you leave

It isn't enough to know that your flight is at 10:30, it is just as important to know which terminal the plane departs from, what time check-in opens and when boarding begins. Missing this information, or getting it wrong, can leave you feeling lost the moment you arrive at the airport, and that increases the risk of being late. Before you leave home, check all the details in your flight booking or on the carrier's website. Terminals do sometimes change, especially for flights from large airports such as Chopin Airport in Warsaw.

Leave with time to spare, at least 2 to 3 hours before departure

It's not worth leaving everything to the last minute. Even if you live relatively close to the airport, unexpected obstacles can always arise: traffic jams on the route, diversions, a delayed taxi or a car breakdown. That is why it is best to follow this rule: for a domestic flight, arrive 2 hours early, and for an international or charter flight, at least 3 hours before departure. Why does this matter so much? Because ticket and baggage check-in as well as the security check can take longer than you expect, especially during the holiday season, on public holidays or during the morning rush. On top of that, you need time to park the car, take the shuttle bus from the car park, and then walk to the right gate.

Check in online and prepare your documents

Many airlines, especially low-cost carriers, require passengers to check in online before arriving at the airport. It is a convenient solution that not only saves time but also reduces the risk of delays at the check-in desks. Once checked in, download your boarding pass to your phone or print it out, depending on your preferences and the airline's requirements. It is worth having it available offline too (for example as a PDF), so you avoid problems if there is no internet at the airport.

And what if I miss my flight?

Missing your flight is a stressful situation, but it doesn't yet mean the end of your trip. If you find yourself unable to make your departure, act quickly and decisively, because every minute counts.

1. Contact the airline

The first step is to get in touch with the carrier immediately, ideally through the helpline or the passenger service desk at the airport. Some airlines offer what is known as the “flat tire rule”, the option of rebooking your ticket free of charge or at a reduced price if you turn up with only a slight delay and can document the reason for being late (for example an accident or a traffic jam).

2. Check the terms of your ticket fare

Not every ticket allows flexible changes. If you have a flexible or business ticket, you can often change it free of charge. With promotional tickets or those from low-cost airlines, this unfortunately often means losing the ticket without a refund.

3. Ask about the next available flight

If possible, ask about the next flight to the same destination, you may be able to pay only the difference in price. Some airlines have special “last-minute” rates for passengers who missed an earlier flight.

4. Take care of your luggage

If you managed to check in your luggage but did not board the plane, inform the airline or the ground staff to avoid losing your suitcase. In many cases the luggage will be taken off the aircraft.

5. Arrange new transport or accommodation if necessary

If the new flight is the following day, look for a hotel near the airport, some airlines offer help with accommodation. It is also worth checking whether the car park you are using can be extended at no extra cost.

6. Draw conclusions for the future

Missing a flight is a painful but valuable lesson. Analyse what went wrong, leaving too late, not booking parking, problems with check-in? This will help you plan your next trip better and avoid similar situations.

Low-cost airlines vs. traditional carriers - what's the difference in practice?

Low-cost airlines often lure travellers with a low ticket price, but before you book it pays to check what the basic fare actually covers. Luggage, seat selection, check-in or priority boarding can all change the final cost of your trip. Traditional airlines work a little differently, although these days the differences between carriers aren't always obvious. In this article we explain how a low-cost airline really differs from a traditional one in practice, when it's worth choosing a budget carrier and what to watch out for so you can avoid extra fees before departure.

How much cash can you carry on a plane?

You can carry cash with you on a plane, but before you travel it pays to check what rules apply on your particular route. Many people look for an answer to the question of how much euro you can take across the border per person, because that is often what determines whether you will need to declare your funds. What matters here is not only the destination country, but sometimes also the place where you change flights and the local customs regulations. In the rest of this article we explain it all without unnecessary complications.
